Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

  • Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows

The Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows was completed in 1876 after numerous obstacles and a great deal of discontent on the part of the local population. Immediately after, the church became a parish church, inheriting the role from the old parish of St George in Jezero Klanječko.

At the end of 2020, the earthquake that hit Sisak, Petrinja, Glina, Zagreb and the surrounding area also inflicted heavy damage on the Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. In the spring of 2021, with the support of the parishioners and with the funds from the insurance, works began on restoring the damaged parts of the church – the ceiling, frescoes and floors. The church is a single-nave edifice with a sanctuary and a 22-metre bell tower rising on the east side above the main entrance. It is 24 metres long and 12 metres wide. The bell tower houses two bells – the larger bell of Our Lady of Sorrows and the smaller bell of St Anthony. The sacristy is located on the south side, as is the gallery which was originally reserved for prominent parishioners, members of the local noble families. The church also boasts beautiful stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible. The church’s centrepiece, however, is the main altar of Our Lady of Sorrows. The painting of Our Lady of Sorrows occupies the central part of the altar. In the painting, Mary is holding her dead son under the cross, with two angels standing by her side. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul are secluded in the high niches on the side of this altar.

This beautiful building on a small hill next to the road has one more surprise for visitors and chance travellers, located near the south side of the church. Here you will find a statue of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac, the work of academic sculptor Ante Jurkić.
