The Chapel of Saint Margaret in Lenišće is a true tangible and cultural treasure of the Tuhelj parish. The current chapel building was built in 1703. In 1639, a wooden chapel by the same name stood there. The Lenišće chapel altar is a real work of art of baroque sculpture. The altar is dominated by the beautiful statue of Saint Margaret leading a dragon on a chain, the primary reason for the chapel being classified cultural heritage of religious art. During the canonical visitation of Toma Kovačević in 1703, renowned historian, theologian and then canon of the Zagreb Kaptol, he noted that the altar was “a decoration above all decorations, which brought joy to the patron saint and the entire chapel”.

The altar also houses the statues of Saint Peter of Alcántara, Saint John of Nepomuk, Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara.

The chapel sits on a raised plateau above the village. This humble building with a rectangular nave and polygonal shrine features a brick tower built in 1835. The chapel was damaged in an earthquake in 1880 and was completely renovated in 1884. In the church inventory dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, alongside the altar with tremendous artistic value, there is also a chalice from the mid-17th century, mass vestments and a missal printed in Venice.

In the central chapel niche is a statue of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus, adorned with decorative acanthus leaf elements. It is assumed that this statue is older than the chapel and was brought here just before the chapel was built.

Worship in this chapel is held on special occasions, on the second Sunday in June, a mass of thanksgiving is held on the second Sunday in November, on All Souls’ Day on 2nd November and on 26th December on Saint Stephen’s Day.
